Binghamton University has both undergraduate and graduate level programs and is located 30 miles to the west, as isBroome Community College which is a two year school. There are many fine schools within the University such as Watson School of Engineering, Decker School of Nursing, School of Management, School of Education and Human Development and the Harpur School of Arts and Sciences. The Community College offers technology, engineering, computer science, business and office technologies, and health sciences. In the year 1990/91, the University had an enrollment of 9,150 undergraduates and 3,052 graduates and the Community College has 3,316 full-time students and 2,948 part-time students. There is a State University two year college of technology in Delhi, located 45 miles to the east. The enrollment at Delhi is 2,300 full and part-time students.
The Deposit area and Broome and Delaware Counties as a whole are well known for quality recreational facilities.Delaware boasts of 700 miles of trout streams which receive an annual stocking of over 74,000 trout. Many streams sustain native brown and brook trout and receive no stocking. The West Branch of the Delaware River which flows through Deposit is a world class trout fly fishing stream. The Oquaga Creek flows through the village and has a handicap accessible spot located in Firemen's Park. There are over 70,000 acres of forever wild lands located within the two counties, most of which are marked for hiking.
Winter snow turns these trails into ideal cross country skiing and snowmobile trails. There are also snowmobile trails near the village which lead to abandon sections of the O & W Railroad, that in turn provide access to Hancock, NY and Forest City, P.A. There are four lakes located within 5 miles of Deposit. Oquaga Lake which is 3 miles to the southwest offers some the highest priced real estate in southern New York.
The Binghamton urban core area offers many recreational and cultural opportunities. There is a 7,200 seat arena that is home to an American Hockey League team and there is a 5,500 seat baseball stadium which is host to a triple A team of the New York Mets. Binghamton is also on the PGA Tour hosting the BC Open each September, which beginning in 1995 holds a $1,000,000 purse and TV coverage via the Golf Channel. Other attractions include the Anderson Center for the Arts on the University Campus; the BC Pops which is the oldest exclusively pops orchestra in New York State; the Kopernic Observatory which is the largest observatory in the State; the Forum in downtown Binghamton which offers Broadway shows, opera, etc. and finally there is the Roberson Museum and Science Center which is nationally recognized and accredited and emphasizes art, folk art, history, science, and technology. The center has a 296 seat theater, ballet studios, research library and a historic turn of the century mansion which is home to the Broome County Historical Society.
There are seven hospitals in Delaware and Broome Counties which generally meet the day to day needs of the residents. Major medical care is available in three hospitals in the Binghamton area and, one of these is in the top five cardiac care units in the state.
